I know T, Wife and Mia are traveling yet today.. so I thought I would post the update from yesterday.. hope he doesn't mind.

Very good news today as we are being discharged either this afternoon or tomorrow morning and we will be coming home for at least ten days. Mia's surgery was very successful and the doctors expect a full recovery in time. Starting early August she will begin her radiation and chemotherapy sessions which will have a duration of up to six weeks. Our job right now is to get Mia healthy and strong for that process. Right now she is having trouble expressing herself, but that is do to the swelling from the surgery. She tends to get irritable quickly due to frustration. She has her full memory and can answer most questions asked of her.

We also need to work on her physical abilities as she is not walking on her own yet. She can walk but needs someone with her and also needs to be encouraged. Right now she prefers to sleep mostly, but we will start demanding more of her in a few days. With the help of family and friends we expect her to be able to battle the follow up treatments as smoothly as possible.

One thing I have been extremely impressed with throughout this process is the confidence the doctors have in Mia ultimately having a full recovery. The first Oncologist even used the word cured, which I'm sure is a word that wouldn't be thrown around loosely.

That's just... Fantastic. I can't think of an adjective big enough to describe. I usually stick to the Packers page so I didn't come across this story until yesterday. Our family's prayers are with you.

Well, I haven't updated things in a while so I'll let you all in on what's been going on. We are at Mayo this week with the objective to get a spinal tap, chemo port, and radiation molding done. She's in surgery right now for the chemo port and spinal tap. Mia has gotten much stronger over the last ten days but still requires a little balancing help when she walks. We were wrestling on the floor the other night a little, and I had her do some neck stretches, because the tumor removal weakend the neck muscles and she needs to regain strength there.

Mia has been a real trooper through all of this. Julie and I explained to her that she will be losing her hair, but we showed her the wig we are going to get her, so she seemed to be OK with it. Sorry Cheesey, we won't be needing your golden locks afterall. Although, I'm sure the boys wouldn't mind seeing the "Nitczke" look from you.

August 16th is when her radiation and chemo begin and it will be for a grueling 6 weeks. Our job is to get her strength back and to keep her spirits up.

Julie and I have been overwhelmed with all of the support that has been sent our way from both friends and unknown places. We really can't say thank you enough to everyone. I have been changed emotionally forever by these events. I use to think there was so many terrible things that dominate this world, but it took my little girl's illness to prove differently. I definitely need to make some changes on my convictions.

Anyway, we will be going back to Bismarck on Friday, and she will get to spend another week with her sisters before the rad/chemo therepy begin. Julie and I still feel blessed throughout all of this because when we look around at other patients here, things could have been so much worse, had we not made early detection of the tumor.

Thanks again to all of you sending your prayers.

This is the first I've heard of her condition since before I departed for my annual training. I'm thankful to hear that your daughter apparently has an indomitable spirit and that this ordeal has drawn you closer together. It is truly one of the ironies of human existence that it is sometimes the tragedies of our lives that renew our optimism toward the universe. It is impossible to love without pain, as you are learning vividly. As humans, we tend to fear and loathe pain, yet pain is what keeps us alive, keeps us in touch with our intrinsic humanity. I was listening to NPR recently, and one of the guests made a fascinating point: He said that it is the very knowledge of our mortality that makes the experience of being human so amazing. It is the knowledge that our lives are so short that brings sweetness and depth to our existence. I wouldn't wish your suffering on my worst enemy, but I believe that in your family's sufferings, you are rediscovering these truths.

I don't claim to understand anything about God, but I do commend you to his care. When you look back on this time and see only one set of footprints in the sand, you will know why.

Dakota! Thanks for the update!
I'm tickled to hear she's fighting the good fight!
And i'm happy for her that she will have a "new" head of hair until her own grows back!
I've been thinking of her when ever i run the brush through my hair.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
