There has to be a reason though. I know McCarthy isn't stupid enough to not realize you can never have too many good CB's.

Yeah, I agree.

Granted Al Harris will be 36 next year, but releasing when you could have put him on IR?

The Packers will still be responsible for Al Harris' salary, they won't get any real benefit from cutting him. Maybe the Packers are trying to do Al a favour by cutting him to let him play somewhere else this season because he thinks he can play this year.

Off the top of my head, though, I cannot think of any benefit by cutting Al instead of placing him on IR.

He'll be a Viking by Wednesday.

This scares me, because the Vikings could use better CBs.

However, Harris is made for press-man schemes (like the Jets). He'd be manhandled if asked to play traditional Cover 2 coverage... surely the Vikes realize this?

That's about the last place I want to see him end up. I am still surprised by this move - the JS reported Friday night that rumours were Lee's ankle injury was serious enough to have him put on IR. We could use a CB, especially since we're one injury from Bush / Underwood playing big roles as Nickle backs.

We play them in two weeks. It's like signing Howard Green before the Jets game. Sure, you can use him as a player, but you also want to know everything he knows about the team you'll be facing.

Am I wrong in the impression that Dimitri Nance provides better value for the Packers than Al Harris? That is the signal I am receiving because clearly, Nance's roster spot is worth more than Harris'.

Al must have lost a lot of steps after his torn ACL. I think he's actually taken the news quite well. If I was going to be cut after being disallowed to practice, I'd be quite upset they didn't cut me earlier. Though given that he is okay with it, perhaps he's reticent to agree that he actually isn't the athlete he was before the injury.

In any case, I'll always remember him for that time when he shut up Matt Hasselbeck. One of many fond memories that Al has provided for us over the years. Best of luck, maybe we'll see you around Lambeau again.

The play of Tramon Williams and our secondary as a whole has been great. Where do you expect Al Harris' roster spot to come from? Underwood would be my only thought or suggestion.

Why am I the only one who's happy to see him go? I never thought he'd step foot on the field this year (do a search of my posts -- I've been saying this the entire offseason), and the last thing I wanted was for him to take up a valuable roster spot. Maybe the Packers can bring him in for a look next year, after he's a year and a half removed from one of the most severe injuries this league has ever seen. I see no way he would have made it through the entire season without reaggravating that knee.

I highly doubt any other team will pick him up, but if one does, I'm willing to bet a week's wages he never starts.

There are multiple good reasons to let him go, really.

His salary isn't huge, but it's way too much to just fork out to someone who's going to be your 4th corner corner. $2,5 million, if I'm correct. We should be off the hook if someone claims him off waivers, right?

And yes, 4th, since he's obviously not going to beat out Sam Shields, the way he's been playing. At the start of the season, I would've said that he'd come back as a starter. Maybe as a nickel CB if Tramon played well. Shields came out of nowhere, though.

Lastly, Harris was never one of the fastest guys and he's getting up there in age. Having your knee busted twice in two years doesn't really help in that department, either. We have no clue how much he has left at this point. Maybe it's close to nothing.

Harris has had problems shutting down his man the last couple years. I don't like seeing him go.

Hate to see Al released was one of my fav CB's on the team. He did lose his job to injuries, Tramon stepped up and is a top CB in the league now with the emergence of Shields there's just no more room for Al.

I think the management decided to go with youth movement here over a veteran.

36 and getting older / injured CB ... IMO right business move but ... we should of kept him for loyalty reasons.

I'd agree with this, if we weren't so banged up in several other positions and there wasn't such a tight premium on the 53.
