dhazer,

I think there are factors on both sides of the equation at play. Their legitimate concern for his continued good health - and- how this transition may affect our cap. I don't think we can say it is simply one or the other guiding their decisions regarding Collins. But, yeah, there are some very real issues with regards to how this plays out in dollars and cents. No question. Collins suiting up for another team is something none of us wants to see. Could happen though. I hope not.

Definitely Favreian with Packers brass, should they not wish for him to play again, considering their options. Do they offer a big monetary package to Collins as incentive to give up playing and stay on with the team as a coach or in a front office position? I'm doubting this would happen, but they would have an option to trade him. Wouldn't get much in return. The similarities in the circumstances are remarkable, though I believe Nick Collins to be the better man of the two.

A ton of issues at play.

Thanks for the cap info bro.

Everyone saying Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy are concerned about his health are blind. Cmon folks its all about the money face it and someone brought up the PR disaster a few years ago being bad. Well get ready because Collins will be another PR hit. Look at it in black and white and to the point, Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson are doing everything they can to keep Collins from coming back. The man had the surgery so he could come back to play football, he is cleared by the doctors but yet the cold hearted Ted Thompson all of a sudden becomes huge hearted and worried about a players health. Get ready to see Collins in blue and silver or playing down in Chicago. As Arrigo said they packers are looking to extend some players this year but we are close to the cap right now. The part I am wondering like play2win brought up, is how strapped are we on the cap room?

As of March 30th the Packers have $3.4 million in cap space. Ok just wanted to throw that out there

edit: ok a little tidbit on found on rotorworld while i was looking for Collins contract details.

Packers FS Nick Collins (neck surgery), "bouncing off the walls" in anticipation of returning to the NFL, is expected to push coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson to play if he's given the green light from doctors later this month.
McCarthy has made it clear that all parties involved must be in agreement for Collins to return to the Packers. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, not a single cervical fusion has failed among all NFL players to undergo the procedure. After a 20-year study of NFL players, assistant professor of spine surgery at Northwestern University Wellington Hsu downplays the risks and insists Collins can play "at a high level" again. This is most positive outlook we've seen on Collins' football future. Apr 11 - 9:01 AM

So now tell me that its Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson worried about his health

Nick Collins is extremely valuable to the Packers team. When they need cap room, they will look into redoing contracts for Chad Clifton and/or Donald Driver, NOT by cutting a healthy Nick Collins. The goal of the NFL is Championships, not containing 53 players under the cap.

It's a disappointing when you cross paths with someone whom feels money trumps every decision.

I don't see how it is THEIR decision to make. It is Nick's risk, not theirs. If he wants to do it, try to talk him out of it. If not, say alright boy get back up on that horse lets do the damn thing.

I'm not saying the Public Relations potential issue is a major concern, but I wouldn't pass it over as not being present on the Packers minds.

As for dhazer's comments ... The notion the Packers want to get rid of player the caliber of Nick Collins for the extra $3.5 million or whatever is preposterous. Nick Collins is easily one of three most valuable players on defense for the Packers.

Zero if you believe its them actually worrying about his health I have a bridge to sell you Arizona. As i shared the surgery is common and hasn't failed yet, but hey MM and Ted Thompson must not believe that. It's mostly about the money face it. Ted Thompson is cold hearted and is about money.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Man, if Collins absolutely insists on playing, I would prefer it was with GB, a team that cares about the man he is. What a tough set of circumstances. I hope Ted and Mike consider this, rather than the notion of an ultimatum: "retire or play somewhere else."

If he is cleared by his docs, and the Packers docs, I don't see why they wouldn't want him playing here, other than that fact that they don't want to see him possibly laid out again. They can clearly state their wishes to not have him play again, but if the man is going to play, regardless, keep him in the Packers fold.

A perfect catch 22 situation. Might as well let him play and keep our fingers crossed. 75% of Collins is twice as good as Peprah. It's an upgrade and we already have two safeties being groomed. Frees up the draft to take another Left Tackle and cut Clifton and possibly twinkle toes Driver.

I sure hope this doesn't get ugly.

If the Packers do not allow Nick to play, despite his wishes, I hope he goes to another team and becomes an even better player than he was during his time with the Packers. That might sound odd as a Packers fan, but I'm personally a big believer in individual choice of what one does with their body. The thought of someone else dictating that decision to another just bothers me. Obviously I wish Nick the best in general, whether it's with the Packers or not in the NFL at all. But still, my original comment stands.

I believe we have recently posted an article that cites players having similar surgery and problems from it. I could be mistaken, however, I ask you this. What NFL Safety has had the same exact surgery and resumed his career without further damaging their spinal cord/neck area?

I believe the Packers are weighing a lot more into this decision than simply money. Why is it so hard to grasp that a decision can include something more than money?

I don't understand how anyone thinks anything but Nick Collins' health is being considered first in this decision for him to resume his role as a player on the Packers defense.

$3.5 million or Nick Collins ... seriously, THINK about that there. What is more important to the Packers?

It has to be about Nick Collins health. If he's not healthy, it's bad PR and lost money, aside from the main concern, the man's health!

I won't question Ted Thompson is cold hearted, but it's evident you're even more cold hearted than he.

Which, I believe is being told to him because unlike others whom required similar surgery ... Nick Collins suffered zero paralysis. He experience numbness in his limbs.
