I'd like to think that I'm pretty good with the NFL rules, but I was confused on the discussion over our fumble very near the goal line (I think it was a retuned INT).

If the ball was actually fumbled into the endzone, (and not recovered) it would have then been ours on their 20 yard line, right?

Nope, their ball on their own 20.

It is what I consider to be the worst rule in the NFL. If you fumble it into the opponent's endzone and it goes out of bounds, it is a touchback and the opponent gets the ball on the 20 yard line.

I like your version better.

If I were in charge I would change this rule immediately, and then look into changing the "automatic first down" rule on some penalties.

If the ball carrier fumbles the ball into the endzone and it goes out of bounds, it is then the enemies ball at the 20 yard line.

Edit, sorry forgot to find and provide my source.

Fumble

1. The distinction between a fumble and a muff should be kept in mind in considering rules about fumbles. A fumble is the loss of player possession of the ball. A muff is the touching of a loose ball by a player in an unsuccessful attempt to obtain possession.

2. A fumble may be advanced by any player on either team regardless of whether recovered before or after ball hits the ground.

3. A fumble that goes forward and out of bounds will return to the fumbling team at the spot of the fumble unless the ball goes out of bounds in the opponents end zone. In this case, it is a touchback.

4. On a play from scrimmage, if an offensive player fumbles anywhere on the field during fourth down, only the fumbling player is permitted to recover and/or advance the ball. If any player fumbles after the two-minute warning in a half, only the fumbling player is permitted to recover and/or advance the ball. If recovered by any other offensive player, the ball is dead at the spot of the fumble unless it is recovered behind the spot of the fumble. In that case, the ball is dead at the spot of recovery. Any defensive player may recover and/or advance any fumble at any time.

5. A muffed hand-to-hand snap from center is treated as a fumble.

I like the rule, I remember this rule being used to the packers advantage. Can't remember which WR it was that slapped the ball out of the defenders hands running into the endzone after a pick of Favre.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

There is a legitimate reason for having the rule in place, the design of the rule is to prevent the ball carrier from purposely fumbling into the end zone when it is clear they may not cross the goal line on their own.. by putting some risk (loss of possession) upon the act.

Might not be the most effective way of preventing the "holy roller" type play.. or question of loss of down or possession questions.

Additionally.. how does one rule a fumble on a fourth down on such a play? In this scenario it seems appropriate, however I think they could come up with a better way of dealing with it than a touchback on other downs.

I always thought you couldn't fumble forward anyway, if you retained possession. Mark it at the spot of the fumble.
