Adam Schefter out of ESPN reported that Michael Lewis just got released by San Francisco.

Is this somebody Green Bay should pursue as a stopgap player for Burnett.

He's not really a character issue. I'm from the Bay Area, and when Michael Lewis was first signed, he made an immediate impact. Now he just fell out of favor with the coaches because of Deshaun Goldson and their recent draft choice in Taylor Mays (who's pretty much the same as Lewis, except faster and bigger).

While Lewis can be a liability in coverage sometimes, I would put him above Bigby as far as actual skill goes.

Is he better than Martin? Does he have more experience playing safety than Martin? Is he a team player/not going to be a locker room problem?

If those are all positive I'd say sign him. Idk a lot about him, but it'd be tough to not have more experience than Martin there...

Personally I would be all for adding another veteran back there.. but to be honest.. just haven't seen much of Lewis since Philly.. can't speak much to him.

Just had to add the splat. lol.

I think the factor that's most often overlooked is how complex the defenses are these days, and how much time and effort it takes for a new player, especially a DB, to get up to speed and be effective. He'd have to be waaaaay better than Martin to come in and take a starting spot right away. This kind of thing just doesn't happen. An RB could be brought in to start right away. A DB? I don't think so.

He was a consistent safety in Philly learning under Brian Dawkins.

He's started every year in Singletary's defense. I'd credit that.

I believe he made one Pro Bowl. Not sure.

Better than Martin? Yes. More experienced than Martin? Yes. Locker room problem? He sort of is right now, but it was more of an overreaciton.

But if you're being signed in the middle of the season, you can't expect to start right away. He has the skill to though. He's definitely a better player than Derrick Martin and there's no guarantee Bigby comes back.

I agree that he is far better than Martin and there is no guarantee Bigby will even pkay this year. But martin looked ok out there. The only way I could see Lewis coming in and playing right away was if our safeties not named Nick Collins were ALL terrible. So that means if Lewis was signed and started right away that would be a very bad signal. But I'd be all for signing him, in hopes that be could earn a starting spot next year.

The Packers will need more depth at the safety position. He looks like a very solid player. Anyone left on the market is worth looking into at this point.

Yes, there is no guarantee Bigby will be ready to play after coming off PUP. Besides the Packers were looking for Bigby's replacement long before he was injured.

This kind of player speculation isn't worth our time unless the Packers reported to be bringing in this player. Otherwise it's all useless chatter.
