Pointing to such a marked aberration is hardly a good way to support one's argument that an outstanding return team is essential to winning a championship.

Wow. "Essential to winning a championship" is quite a leap from a thread discussion of whether having a good returner is overrated or not.

Things "essential" to winning a championship are things like defense, turnover differential, elite QB/passing game.

A returner falls into the "helps to win a championship" category, IMO. And I think that it would be hard to argue that Desmond Howard, SB XXXI MVP, did not help the Packers win that championship.

I didn't disagree. My point is that Super Bowl XXXI is the only notable case of an exceptional returner having a significant impact on the outcome of the game.

Agreed.

Nice to have, not essential.

I'd rather have a really good returner than have the ST we've been seeing the past few years.

I am going to have to say that comment missed the point.

It should go without saying that you want the team to better everywhere.

The question before the court is:

Is it more important to have a return guy who gets you a couple of TDs a year if he is phenomenal or a WR who gets you three times that if he is just alright.

Using the Colts vs. Bears example is a little silly, imo. Of course a good return man isn't going to win the game by himself. In order to become a champion, a good team is generally needed all the way around. While an elite special teams unit can certainly help, God himself can only do so much for Sexy Rexy Grossman. And while the Bears defense was very good, I feel as if it's pretty rhetorical that, at minimum, a decent defense and offense is needed in addition to an elite ST's unit in order to win a super bowl.

The Bears are the essence of my point. They have that great (maybe greatest) return guy. But they lack weapons for the Offense to score. You can win the Super Bowl with a horrible return game. Indy, NO, Packers etc. But you can't win without decent WRs.

You can try and depend on the D to keep it close and hope one of the 3 returns a year happens when you need it. But then you are counting on luck.

If you have to play 3 straight games to win a Super Bowl and part of your strategy is to get lucky...I wouldn't bet on it.

It is actually more relevant than the one in a lifetime impact of Desmond Howard. It has been done more than once.

Why is this argument going on? ...

Why cant we have both good WRs and a good return guy? ...

ya sure a return guy wont win us the SB on his own ... and 1 WR wont win a SB on his own either ...

We might have a guy that can play both ... so happy days.

What if you already got 4 WRs and 3 TEs who can do that? (And now two RBs?)

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔

Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
