Collinsworth is right, Murphy and now Gutekunst did Mike a favor.

Gutless is what this is.

Murphy screwed up by half assing it last year and now is throwing all the blame on Mike with help from Gutekunst

Going to be real interesting who THEY hire.
The chain of command is severely flawed in Green Bay.

Mark Murphy comes out smelling like a rose.

Behind closed doors he has to be laughing all the way to the bank.

There really was no one left to fire, and I think McCarthy realized that early on. As things stood on the day McCarthy was fired, it was team president Mark Murphy’s call. He changed the organizational structure in January, when he forced out aging general manager Ted Thompson and promoted Brian Gutekunst. In the same move, he took the power over the head coach away from the GM’s office and gave it to himself, straying from the Packers’ long-standing successful model that began when Ron Wolf was brought in as general manager in 1991.

Perhaps Murphy will return to that power structure. If so, one league source said he expected Gutekunst to want a "no-nonsense guy." The source said Gutekunst has long been a fan of Jim Harbaugh, the current Michigan coach and former 49ers coach.

I agree, assuming MM can rebound into a decent job, and the Packers can get a decent new head coach, this way might of been better than just firing him right after Gute was hired.

I don't agree with this assessment. Bill Belichick was historically a defensive-minded coach, yet when he was gifted Tom Brady, he became an offensive genius. I think I'd rather bring in a hard-nosed defensive-oriented coach who has the self-confidence to delegate offensive playcalling duties to an assistant and has the charisma and vision to oversee the entire team. Forge a stingy, punishing defense that stifles opposing offenses, and Aaron Rodgers doesn't have to play like a god to carry this team week after week.

I think the fear of a defensive minded coach is two pronged. First off I think many fans are finally happy that we seem to have gotten a defensive coordinator who may actually improve the defense and they are afraid that if we get a defensive minded coach that may limit some of what Mike Pettine has already done.

Second I think they assume that since we have Aaron Rodgers we need an offensive minded coach to help bring him back to his old self.

I kind of agree with you. I think the right OC and offensive coaching staff could do just fine bringing our offense back to what it was. I also like your idea of a stifling defense. A coach with a strong defensive background may want to bring in his own DC but maybe not. If he sees what Pettine has done so far and what he has done in the past he may feel he can work with him to create just the type of defense you mention.

I never really liked the idea of a HC calling the plays. I always felt it kept him too much out of tune with the entire team. Sure it can work but like you I would rather see a guy who is great at motivating players and coaches to accomplish his vision and not feel that he has to do it all himself.

But yeah what Jones mentions is one problem with having the head coach call the plays (at least if he's not the one running the offense in practice) getting the good feedback.
