Remember, guys, Ted Thompson promised this kid that if he'd agree to sign with us after the draft, we wouldn't draft a running back. Thompson must have seen something pretty good in him to make a deal like that. I think Sutton is justifying Thompson's confidence to this point.

It shows we wanted him enough to sign him as an UFA. If we were really high on him we would have drafted him.

I'm glad we've got him though, we have a real fight on between Wynn, Sutton and Lumpkin.

In TC Wynn appeared to be having the best of the reps but after the Browns game the race has really tightened up.

I just watched the game again, on DVR. Sutton performed very well and I wouldn't mind seeing him make the team. Grant looked allright and Jackson looked good. Lumpkin looked ok. Wynn looked ok. Right now it seems like Grant/Jackson/Sutton could be 1/2/3.
Do we keep 3 or 4?

The Browns starters were pretty awful, it's no wonder Lumpkin and Sutton had their way with their 3rd stringers.

I'm glad we play the Titans in our last preseason game. While every other team rests their starters the Titans will be playing their first team.

So our trio of backs fighting for a roster spot will actually be up against players who represent a genuine NFL game experience.

The battle will probably be decided in that game.

Honestly i could see one of the RBs being put on PUP for the first 6 weeks(wynn, lumpkin, jackson have all been hurt) which makes it really a battle to stay healthy, and then probably a 4 way battle for the final 3 spots.

I think that ship has sailed. If you're on the active roster at the start of training camp you can't be put on the PUP list.

I think it is going to be extremely interesting to see how this roster numbers play out around three positions, RB, FB and TE. If I had to wager, I am thinking that the Packers might be contemplating keeping 2 TE's and an extra FB or RB.. with a couple of young TE's on the roster that might be able to be held onto via the practice squad.

Just a feeling... that they want to hold onto Wynn but aren't confident in his ability to be available enough to not have another RB on the roster. And with MM affection to use that double FB set, I can see some consideration to keeping 3 FB's and 2 TE's... should provide some dramatics late into the cut downs.

With Havner pulling double duty its realistic to think they may keep 2 TEs(lee, finley) and keep Havner as #3 TE/LB/Special teams. That leaves another spot for a RB/FB, going light at TE you would be it would be an extra FB tho, seeing as its been said that FB/TE are pretty interchangable in the packer's offense. That being said, when you're counting on your #3 TE or FB to make a major contribution, you're pretty much screwed at that poistion. So a 4th RB isnt all that unlikely in my mind.

So what would be the normal amount of FB RB TEs? 2 3 3? and if they choose something different they might do 3 3 2?

They are using alot of guys as ST guys this season also ie dual roles it seems.

Traditionally yes, 2 FB, 3 RB, 3 TE's... but with the injuries along the dline and linebackers... maybe that Havner like mentioned would provide insurance at both like earthquake mentions.. the shaping of the roster is going to be both difficult and exciting for the coaches to make and the fans to interpret.
