Okay, so I probably missed the entire point of the thread with my first post.

Re: misunderstood quietness:
I think its that while people are often good at what Adam Smith called "sympathy" or "fellow feeling," very few people are good at "empathy" or "feeling the same thing". So we notice what you are doing, and we put it into our pre-existing categories of fellow feeling: "Zero joking = normal; Zero not joking=something not normal, maybe wrong." If we were better at empathy, we'd be thinking instead, "Zero joking, Zero in joking mode; Zero quiet, Zero in thinking mode."

Empathy is a lot tougher because it requires deeper identification with the other person, "knowing" the other person. Sympathy only requires paying attention to what the other person might value.

For example, if I trade with someone else I have to pay some attention to what the person might value: I can't just charge whatever I want; I can only charge what the market will bear, and that means I need to try to think about (be sympathetic with) others might be willing to bear. And I can do that level of "fellow feeling" even with the strangers I encounter in the marketplace.

But getting that empathy thing done ... well, I can't do that with strangers. Only with intimates. I can't be content with thinking about what others might value. I have to be able to value as they value.

And that most of us, how do I say it, suck at.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Well done, Wade.

This makes up for what you just said in the Back Alley about English "cuisine."

you're quiet and just minding your own business. Everyone asks you what's wrong? Why does something have to be wrong? Why can't you just be quiet without an issue? And it's normally the people who you know don't really care if you're going through a hard time or not, they just want you to put it aside and make a clown of yourself so there day goes faster.

This happens in real life all the time for me.. most often I am thinking and doing multiple things at one time and I have this spaced "pissed off" look as people say it.. couldn't be farther from the truth.

But it has its advantages at times.. some avoid me with the mundane rhetorical questions. ;)

Yep, thinking = bad mood, I guess. I think a lot, I like to think, I like being prepared for things. At times, there's just too much going on to think about everything and you step back and think 'wtf is going on, how did it come to this and why cant i think my way out of it?!?!'. Sometimes just ignoring it all and laughing is good.

I'm kinda the same way. My two main personality types are the outgoing guy who loves to have fun/easily distracted, thus funny/goofball, and the reserved, quiet, keep to my self type with minimal facial expressions. I know they sound like contradicting traits, but really goes together pretty well. Some times I like being the center of attention and talk a lot. Other times, I just like to chill out and listen/daze. A lot of the times it just depends on my mood.. And when I'm in my reserved mood, people tend to think I'm either cranky/depressed or pissed off about something. Either way, unless they are really close to me, they avoid bringing up how I'm feeling . Works out pretty well.

beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
