Nice point, DJD29.

Grant's under-rated, and certainly by Packers fans. Why?

1. We don't have a running offense - we have a passing offense that is complemented by the run. He's not expected to have huge gains, and the plays called for him aren't designed for that. The design is to mix it up so that the defense can't simply assume a pass will happen.

2. We spend 2 years complaining about the offensive line as it pertains to the QB protection, but we don't factor that in when looking at Grant's production? Dude got 1200+ yards two seasons straight running behind that hot mess - he ought to get a medal.

Grant is a good running back - no, he's not Adrian Peterson good, but he's damn good and he's been damn solid for the Packers. Peterson would be utterly wasted on this team, as he'd be wildly under-used. In fact, I attribute his troubles last year partly to Favre's arrival - Chilly was a member of Reid's staff for years, and like McCarthy he doesn't see a need to run if he can pass it. Thus, the Vikings went from being AD's team to being Favre's team.

In any case, no - Grant shouldn't be compared to Peterson. Hell, if things keep going the way they are in Minny, Peterson himself probably shouldn't be compared to what he could have been. But Grant is a good back, y'all.

I'd be really interested to know how often Grant has been stopped in the backfield.

His style of running tends to get him out of that sort of situation, I think. He just piles into the back of the OL and hopes for a 1 or 2 yard gain than to dance in the backfield for a possible loss. I think it's simply his mentality. One cut and go, maybe two at most. If you can't get free, barge your way forward as far as you can. That's probably what's frustrating for us to watch, when he runs into one of our linemen 5 yards upfield.

I'm going to speculate that, relative to the amount of carries, Grant has fewer carries for loss than someone like Peterson. Or, I'd hope so.

I may be wrong, and often am... But it seems to me any time he does go East or West and not North or South he get's no where and often loses yards.

However.. I agree +1 for the thought.

The ZBS is designed as a one-cut-and-go deal. The blocks aren't there if you're going to try to dance around - anyone other than Barry Sanders himself is going to have a hell of a time in that situation. Grant does precisely what the system dictates he do - if he doesn't make it out of the backfield, that's often due more to the lack of a hole than something he's done wrong.

hmmm well not sure you can factor that into the equation - ie we all know barry sanders had many carries for a loss but we all would give up our whole frontline to just have barry sanders on our team.

I am glad we have grant instead of forte thou 🙂

I'd be in favor of drafting a RB in only 2 conditions:
1) he's a dang good returner,
2) he's a Brian Westbrook type RB

If neither, then I hope we don't waste a pick on a RB.

Grant is a good runner but has been a minimal factor in the passing game.

A lot of people are down on Grant because they see every carry he has. You don't really see AP running into the back of his guys, because they don't show that on ESPN.

We also see Grant falling down alot after he is touched in the open field, compared to AP running the guys over.

David - Nobody is disputing that AP is either the best or 2nd best pure runner in the NFL. What they are disputing is whether or not AP's fumbling problems drop him down several notches, and just how good Grant is.

Like what has been said, Grant has gotten us 1200+ yards two years in a row behind a garbage OL. And when I say garbage, it really is garbage. Our OL is THE example of what an OL shouldn't be. It sucks. It's pathetic. It turns Packer fans into alcoholics.

Hey, I loved watching AP with Favre too. But he seems to fumble at the absolute worst possible times. Grant lost one fumble last year. One.

I'm telling you, the fumbles were symptoms of a greater problem. Chilly wants to run an Eagles-like offense, which takes carries from Peterson and affects the run plays that get called. I don't think it's coincidence that he had his worst year in terms of fumbles when Favre showed up and gave Childress the QB to run the offense the way he wanted to. If they manage to keep that position stocked somehow, Chilly's going to wreck A.D.
