Poll Question: Do you believe you've ever watched a fixed sporting event?

Total: 6

For quite some years, I've believed certain sporting events are fixed. Greed and corruption rule the human heart. Knowing which games are fixed is always a challenge but anyone who has ever watched ESPNs BAD BEATS segment with Scott Van Pelt has to know this happens.

We saved Vegas...

This thread reminds me of something an Iraqi (who happened to hold a PhD in nuclear physics) once said to me: the problem with Americans is that they think their opinions matter for no other reason than that they happen to have them -- even if they have no information or knowledge to back them up.

I have no possible way of knowing whether the fix was in on the game last night. Therefore, even if I had an opinion, which I don't, my opinion wouldn't matter in the least.

As for DPI, everybody knows that's a joke, and it took a SB away from the Seahawks and gave it to the Steelers, allowing the NFL to cash in on a much stronger merchandise purchasing fan base.

You do realize, surely, that fixing games is a federal offense  punishable by half a decade in federal pound-you-in-the-ass prison -- not to mention any state penalties that would be tacked on after you got out? Even a whiff of a league-sanctioned bribery scandal would instantly draw the attention of Congress and probably result in a massive antitrust action that could easily bankrupt the league.

If you don't know that, the officials most certainly do, considering how many of them work as attorneys during the week. I don't have the slightest shade of doubt that if the league ever tried to nudge the officials in the direction of organized corruption, the members of the NFL Referees Association would storm out of the building quicker than you could say "over/under," fleeing any hint of contagion like the plague.

This is a very polarizing issue for sure. Have u watched the, "Bad Beats", segment that follows MNF? Tune in. You will learn some for sure.

I lived and worked in Vegas for a sports network. A guy used to call a co-worker of mine. That co-worker would get off the phone and tell me, "the fix is in". He would rush to get his bet in. He made a killing. I was a near roommate of a guy who hosts a popular show in a major market. He knew the guys involved in some college hoops point shaving scandals. @TheFixIsInTuohy is a good follow on Twitter.

Naive to believe it isn't ever happening. I just don't know how pervasive it is. If you put large sums of money out there corruption is standing right next to it. Look at college football cheating...happens all the time like holding but not often called.

When something defies logic, it's not unreasonable to suspect corruption. The Olympics have a long checkered past with corruption.

Here's the segment I was referring to:

Is it possible that corrupt officials exist? Sure. We all saw what happened with Tim Donaghy. But to imply that the league itself might be sponsoring the corruption is another thing entirely. I don't believe for a second it is happening, that it has ever happened, or that it ever will happen. American football is an inherently chaotic sport, perhaps the most complex sport in existence, featuring an almost infinite array of things that can go wrong. There's no reason to insinuate malfeasance for that which can be explained by mistake and misfortune.

Vegas said before the game they were really going to eat it if Packers didn't cover. Whaddya know? Blown coverage and a walk in TD for Cobb? A screen that went for 6 unimpeded? Davante wide open for 6? Sure...all could be naturally occurring however with all that money at stake it begs questioning.

Nobody wants to think something they invest time in isn't on the up and up but, again, naive to believe it NEVER happens.
