Remember, guys, Ted Thompson promised this kid that if he'd agree to sign with us after the draft, we wouldn't draft a running back. Thompson must have seen something pretty good in him to make a deal like that. I think Sutton is justifying Thompson's confidence to this point.

I'm amazed that Ted "BPA" Thompson would make a deal like that. I'd like to see Sutton get some reps with the #1 offense to see if he could really be worth a roster spot.

It shows we wanted him enough to sign him as an UFA. If we were really high on him we would have drafted him.

I respectfully disagree.

Making this deal with Sutton (gee, are NFL personnel actually allowed to make these arrangements?) gives us greater flexibility to draft more players who could make the team - why waste a draft pick on someone who's going to sign anyway?

The Packers won a five-team bidding war to sign versatile Northwestern University running back Tyrell Sutton.

The Packers kicked in a modest signing bonus and signed Sutton to a three-year deal according to his agent, Alonzo Shavers.

"It's a great place to go compete," Shavers said. "The big thing was that the Packers held to their word that they wouldn't draft another player at the position. They really wanted him. We evaluated the situation and we're excited for Tyrell to be there. We think he fits great."

Sutton is 5-feet-8 and 211 pounds. A combine invite, he ran the 40 in 4.68 seconds, did 12 reps on the bench and had a vertical jump of 33 inches.

He was Ohio's Mr. Football as a high school sdenior, and was a freshman All-American at Northwestern with 1,476 yards his first season.

Sutton had two serious injures -- an ankle in 2007 and a broken wrist in 2008 -- that kind of sidetracked him. When he was healthy last season, Sutton rushed for 890 yards with 305 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.

Sutton is known for being very tough and is built low to the ground. He excels at bouncing off tackles. An excellent receiver, Sutton could fill a need as a shifty third-down back for the Packers. He doesn't have breakaway speed, but he's very quick.

If we thought he was going to be a stud we probably would have thought at least one of the other 31 teams were also high on him and would have used a 7th round draft pick on him.

Clearly to even make that deal we expected no other team was going to bother even spending a 7th rounder on him.

I suspect Ted Thompson felt pretty good about Grant, Jackson, Wynn and Lumpkin and therefore didn't envision drafting a RB so could throw the offer out there to a guy he suspected wouldnt get picked up. He was right.

Are you implying the "five-team bidding war" is an exaggeration?

So what would be the normal amount of FB RB TEs? 2 3 3? and if they choose something different they might do 3 3 2?

They are using alot of guys as ST guys this season also ie dual roles it seems.

Traditionally yes, 2 FB, 3 RB, 3 TE's... but with the injuries along the dline and linebackers... maybe that Havner like mentioned would provide insurance at both like earthquake mentions.. the shaping of the roster is going to be both difficult and exciting for the coaches to make and the fans to interpret.

"Dulak" wrote:

Good bet Havner makes the team this year. He's been playing with the No. 1s on special teams.

Remember last year Lumpkin beat out Wynn for a roster spot. Lumpkin made the team while Wynn was on the practice squad. One preseason game in and Lumpkin looked better.

With Tory Humphery on IR, an extra back makes total sense. There is no way the team will keep three fullbacks. That would be unprecedented in today's NFL.

Very possible that Wynn is released although I could see anyone of them making the team.

Nope.

All I'm saying is that none of those 5 teams thought enough of him to draft him. And another 27 teams didn't even 'bid' for him as an undrafted free agent.

I'm glad we've got him but I'm not going to start proclaiming him to be the next Adrian Peterson just because Ted Thompson decided not to draft another RB in the at the back end of the draft.

The Pack have shown to be a team that gives UFAs a good shot to make the roster. Lumpkin is a one example, wasn't Tramon and Ruvell UFAs that made our roster through the PS? Agents know which teams are good landing spots for their players (says Jack Bechta of NFP.com who wrote an article on this subject).

I just hope we keep 4 RBs.
